“Unbroken Threads”
A collaborative art project between KAN-WIN and Chicago Asian Women Empowerment both non-proft organizations in the Chicagoland area.
The "Unbroken Thread" project consisted of three sessions between August 2023 and January 2024, engaging community members in art workshops and storytelling to build a strong care fabric.
The 34th Annual Gala's theme, "Unbroken Thread," pays tribute to the resilience of Asian American women and children who have survived domestic violence. The artwork incorporates garments worn by survivors, symbolizing their experiences and fostering community and support.
Co-Directors Mia Hitterman and Sona Kim
Each participant brought a garment, which will serve as a contribution to the final project.
Event Series
Informational and Healing Circle
2. Art Board Mood
The first event in the series, included participants from the Chicago Chinatown Community shared their personal stories and educated the local community about sexual abuse.
In the second event, participants created mood boards. This art-healing activity allowed us, as directors, to gain inspiration for developing the structure and design of the final canvas piece.
Final Garment
In the final series, the two Art Directors, myself and Sona, will carefully go through the three bags that the participants brought. We will then curate and transform the contents into two canvas displays that artistically showcase the participants' clothing. The culmination of this creative process will be revealed in January when the final project is showcased.
Outcome
This initiative is a powerful intersection of my passions: community engagement and fashion. It's a fusion where stories are told through the fabric, transcending personal narratives into powerful visual displays. By intertwining the art of fashion with community engagement, I'm contributing to a vital conversation that aims to evoke understanding, empathy, and solidarity within our community.
